You’re an Australian or British actor who’s been out of drama school for a few years, and you’re yearning to play American roles – to share your gifts in that larger market. Maybe you’ve even relocated to the States. You dream of being a Kate Blanchett, a Margo Robbie, a Hugh Laurie or Matthew Rhys.
You’ve got everything it takes, except that one thing…the General American accent… You know you have to learn it. The trouble is, every time you attempt to do just that, you can’t quite get it.
There’s that ONE pesky sound change that hangs you up – every time! (the ‘R’ - am I right?)
Or maybe you have a basic grasp of the changes, but your acting goes out the window as you work with the accent. You feel disconnected from yourself and your talent as you plod through the text without finding the flow of the words- let alone the character’s thoughts and intentions.
Maybe up until now learning the accent has been overly technical and dull. It hasn’t been any FUN!
Maybe your perfectionism stops you before you even start. ‘If I can’t get those sound changes right by tomorrow, why even try!?’
You put off learning it, or worse, you ‘beat yourself up’ and you feel like you just can’t do it. ‘I hate this. I’m no good at accents!’
The dream of sharing your gifts in that larger American market feel farther off than ever…
So how can you master a General American accent without getting frustrated or being perfectionistic? And, most importantly, how do you find your own ‘voice’ inside the accent so you can act with it when you’re auditioning for those American roles… and have fun at the same time?
That’s what this course is all about. Moving from perfectionism to playfulness when learning the necessary physical / vocal changes of the Gen Am accent. And using the character transformation ‘know how’ you already possess to find what we might call your ‘American self’.
You’ll learn how to:
-Explore the Gen Am sound and physicality, while trusting your own sense of play, and letting go of perfectionism.
-Use listening and repeating along with simple, physical gestures and imagery to find the placement, intonation, and sound changes of the accent.
-Create a script notation method that works for you.
-Own who you are with an American accent!
Give yourself the gift of moving from frustration and perfectionism to confident, playful mastery!
This course includes:
- 3 video modules including practice words and sentences to listen to and repeat.
- The Accent Passport 'Playbook' with helpful prompts, practice sentences,
and room to take notes.

My name is Matthew Floyd Miller. Over the last twenty-seven years, in addition to TV, film and radio, I've performed in just over sixty professional theatre productions, on and off Broadway and across the U.S. In 30 of them (that's no exaggeration) I have had to have an accent other than my own. From Standard British to Russian, Norwegian to Alabaman, Israeli to New York Italian, to name a handful.
So, I know the challenge of having to learn an accent in order to conquer a part for an audition, in the rehearsal room or on set.
That's not a brag, it's just to say that in my experience, I have discovered that it's a VERY REAL NEED we actors have to be prepared to meet. If you're wanting to work in the U.S. - General American is a must.
As an actor there are so many things that can hold you back. Some in your control and some out of your control. But if one of the things holding you back from your bigger dream is learning a General American accent, that’s something well within your control, and I want to help you do it!
This is your accent passport!
